INT. PURITAN CHURCH DAY-MORNING
BIG WOMAN
...and it was this redskinned angel
who gave you the healing medicine.
Now, we will guide her to the Lord
and pray her heathen soul be saved.
CUT TO:
Toby walks to the pulpit.
TOBY AS MINISTER
(singing)
...praise God from whom all blessings
flow...
The whole church joins in. The Big Woman and Heintz look at
Toby in disbelief and slowly sit down.
TOBY AS MINISTER (CONT'D)
(smiling exuberantly)
My dear brothers and sisters, today
is a day for rejoicing in the spirit
of the Lord. Today, we shall praise
the Lord for all he has created.
Today, we shall turn to a new chapter
of life granted to us by the Great
Spirit. Jesus said, "Love thy neighbor
as you love thyself". Who are the
neighbors we should love? You all
know who our neighbors are.

TOBY AS MINISTER (CONT'D)
Oh, I'm not talking just about the
neighbors in our village. Jesus wasn't
talking just about our neighbors in
our own village. Jesus was talking
about all our neighbors in the whole
world. Red and yellow, black and
white. They are all precious in his
sight. Jesus loves the little children
of the world. Now, our neighbors
around here are the... who can tell
me?
A little girl puts up a tentative hand.
TOBY AS MINISTER (CONT'D)
Yes, my little darling, tell us who
our neighbors are.
LITTLE PURITAN GIRL
The Indians?
TOBY AS MINISTER
Thank you little darling. That's
right. The Indians! The Indians!
You heard it folks. The Bible says
the truth shall come from the mouths
of babes. The Indians.
The congregation looks perplexed. Low murmuring can be HEARD.
TOBY AS MINISTER (CONT'D)
It is the Indians who healed our
sick brothers and sisters. It is the
Indians who have shown us how to
grow food and hunt and trap on their
lands. We are living on land that
belongs to the Indians. We are
dependent on the Indians. We are
their guests on their land.
